UMIDIGI enters the 5G world with a BANG! Large Screen, lots of storage, and Android 14.
I just love UMIDIGI cell phones. They are very reasonably priced and have lots of power and storage, so they are often a better value than some of the more expensive cell phone brands. One of the issues with the value phones is that they are later introducing some of the features and operating systems that the other brands provide. So, when I saw this 5G, Android 14 UMIDIGI G9 5G Cell Phone on Amazon.com, I snapped it up and had it delivered to Canada. Even with the cost of duty, the price was still very reasonable. I understand it is being released soon on Amazon.ca, but I just couldn’t take the chance. This is the very first time, I’m aware of, that UMIDIGI released a 5G phone in North America, which is why I was so eager to pick one up. Although the 5G platform is not widely available in my area, the great part about this phone is that when it does not find a 5G network, it automatically switches to 4G LTE and seamlessly continues to provide you with the best connection available. If you live in a large city, you’ll likely spend most of your day connected 5G and it is lightning fast comparatively.I really love the 6.75-inch, 90 MHz Eye-care Display. It’s very comfortable to look at everyday and it’s even enjoyable to watch a YouTube video or a Netflix movie on it. I think it’s the perfect size as anything bigger would probably start to feel like you’re carrying a small tablet in your pocket. Despite its large screen, this is amazingly comfortable to carry in your front or back pocket, and you hardly know it’s there.I’ve been using this UMIDIGI G9 5G Cell Phone for about a month now and it is the perfect daily driver. The processor is a solid Unisoc T765 Octa (eight) Core Processor that has 2 large 2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 cores and 6 smaller 2.1 GHz A55 cores on-board. It’s a mid-level processor which provides very smooth computing whether your playing, communicating, creating or multitasking, and provides all the power the average user needs. The UMIDIGI G9 has 6GB of installed RAM. This is sufficient for most average users, in fact it’s probably lots. If you noticed it comes with 12GB in the description, this is because Android 14 has a Memory Expansion option. It uses an equal amount of your storage space (ROM) as RAM. Now if you know don’t know anything about RAM vs ROM (storage) speeds, RAM is almost instantaneous where storage is slower in comparison. However, if a memory-intensive app pushes your 6GB of ram, the expanded ram will jump in and allow your app to continue. I have not yet had a ram issue or a frozen app, whether using the unexpanded 6GB or the expanded 12GB.The G9 comes with 128 GB ROM storage. I consider myself to be an average to intermediate user and I’m currently using about 45 GB or about 1/3 of my storage. This includes 15GB in apps, 8GB of video and audio, 2GB of pictures, and don’t forget, the first 13GB is required for your Android 14 operating system. The UMIDIGI G9 comes with dual sim card slots. One slot is a dedicated sim card slot and the other will accept either a second sim or a micro-SD card (up to 1TB). If you don’t need more storage, the second sim slot can allow you to carry two phone numbers, like a work number and a personal number, on the same device. This is much better than having to carry two devices. The 5000mAh battery is lasting me about two days on a charge at a low, but comfortable, brightness level. However, I usually charge my phone every night, so I evaluated it during an 18-hour period. On FULL brightness, the G9 had 29% battery; at half, the device had 38% left; and at minimum brightness, the phone held 50% battery life after the full day.The only issue I have with this phone is that it does not come with NFC. This is the feature that allows you to tap your phone to pay with your Debit or Credit card. This is not something I use, but I know many users do. I think in these technological times, TAP should always be standard. If you want a worry-free, large-screen, smooth and reliable cell phone that won’t let you down or break the bank, consider the UMIDIGI G9 5G. I chose the GREEN and I really LOVE the colour. It even comes with an installed screen protector and a FREE basic case.

Doesn’t Work On Verizon or AT&T
Really great phone for the price. I broke the screen on my Pixel 6 and while waiting for a replacement I bought this phone to have as a backup. Everything set up as normal and showed connection to Verizon 4G LTE. But I could not make or receive calls or SMS messages. I could use data fine though. Apparently all the major carriers have a whitelist of phones they allow on their network and this isn’t one of them. I read other reviews where they mentioned that it wouldn’t work on AT&T. So beware that even though the frequencies and bands are good, your provider might just block the phone. The phone is relatively fast, screen is great, camera is really good and having the dual sim/sd card ability is great.

Awesome price for all the features
I love this phone for my spare line I have. I will go over all the cons first, then the pros. I don’t like some of the apps they installed (also known as bloatware) and forced ads I have to watch to use them, & almost all of them I can’t delete, only force stop them. There isn’t a huge amount of them, but some. I would not mind the bloatware in the phone as long as I can get rid of what I don’t want, which isn’t the case as they locked them. This is nonsense & although many companies do this practice it’s always a negative. Instead of having the fingerprint on the touch screen it’s on the power button on this phone. Due to it’s very narrow width it’s flaky at best to get it to read your fingerprint where it’s mostly useless as it is much quicker just to enter your passcode. Also if you press to hard since it’s also the power button trying to read your print it will put the screen out on you. This overall is a bad idea. Although the auto adaptive brightness is on by default I noticed it is brighter than desired so I have to manually adjust it frequently, but this is a matter of preference for me. The google widget is locked to it’s position on home screen & totally unmovable or removable which is extremely irritating to me as I don’t want it. It is frustrating that they lock stuff in this manner. Please let me be very clear I am not throwing this phone under the bus here, but rather pointing out some extremely important things that Umidigi needs to be aware of. The improvements made from the knowledge of these things we consumers aren’t happy with is important for them. Now, lets get to the pros of this phone. Storage is awesome with 128G internal and expandable micro SD slot for even more, and the 6 gig of ram is very nice. Price for this phone for it’s features is great! 50 megapixel camera does a very nice job, even has a macro that works well, and in the included photo you can see very good depth of field focus from foreground all the way to the back ground. Although I haven’t done a lot of photo play with this yet I can assure all of you it’s very good for it’s price point. I done a couple of tests of game play (see photos) & although not a light speed device it does well. Normal use of apps, scrolling & pulling up web pages is very fast so it’s great for me. Comes complete with screen protector & case already to go, but I will say the case is minimal for any protection for the phone as it is pretty thin & more plastic like & very little grip to your hand if your hands are dry, but fits perfectly so to be included is very cool! All settings work pretty well & although Android 14 like my other phone it is different in the user interface in some things that can get one a little out of whack to find some things shall we say. Power/volume up/down are on the right and work great with the case, & it also has a hotkey button on the left you can assign something specific to which is very nice. Love the 3.5mm jack plus the fact it’s on the top of the phone. Just a personal preference but it’s always in my way if it were to be on bottom of the phone in my opinion. Many phones now don’t have that capability so it’s a plus in my mind. Sound is very adequate also for it’s speaker & ok for me. I plugged it in to power before I even turned it on for the first time and it had 100% battery in the phone. I installed my sim card and micro SD card before first power on & it took off perfectly & google easily took care of loading all of my apps from other phone doing the type C to type C phone to phone connection. Included also is a 15W charger W/type C to type C cable so you will have cable out of the box needed for transferring files to it from old phone. Very thoughtful of them to do this. Being totally unlocked for any carrier is a huge plus for sure, but just a word of note my Boost sim W/AT&T service cranked up and worked like a champ. Screen resolution quality & size is awesome! There are also some themes installed that are very nice too, & there are 6 of them. If you are in the market for a very good 5G phone with a lot of goodies/features for it’s price then grab you one of these phones. I do highly recommend it!

No tech support / only lte connection
Very disappointed that there is no support for this phone. I’ve bought 2 of these on Amazon thinking the first was defective because it only connected LTE instead of 5g – and was only getting data speeds of 6-8 mb down. I went thru all tech support steps with my carrier on both phones and they couldn’t figure it out either. I like the phone and would like to keep it, but LTE speeds are not tolerable these days.

Umidigi has been my device manufacturer of choice for many years now.The G9 feels good and solid in my hands. I bought the black colour and it looks great with a solid look from all angles. It comes with a translucent white case, pre-applied screen protector and 18W fast charging brick with a double sided USB-C cable. When you turn it on the phone is running on Android 14. Apps, videos and games run good and smooth and the colours are very radiant with 1600×720 resolution on a 6.75” screen. You get 6+6 GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (Expandable to 1TB). There is a dual 5G SIM slot. The camera does a very good job taking videos and pictures. There are many options under the settings with sub-options for the camera which is impressive for a phone in this price range. The main camera is 50 MP and the selfie camera is 8 MP. There is a 2MP macro camera and 2MP depth camera. The battery lasts a long time (5000mAh). The fingerprint reader works well and fast. There is also a face unlock option as well. It has a headphone jack which I appreciate as sometimes I use wired headphones when my earbuds are charging. There is an FM radio which comes in handy in spotty reception areas.Phones from other manufacturers in this price range have a less features, lower speed and less storage.I highly recommend the Umidigi G9.
