Rising food prices

FAO has released update on rising global food prices and reported 3.4 percent surge in January 2011.

The FAO Economist revealed in their update that prices continued to raise in past seven months and the Food Price Index reached to new record level of 231 points. They also predict that the problem is inevitable particularly in food deficit countries with masses of lower income households.

According to the report, wheat and maize were the major contributor to the soring international prices, while the rice prices eased up due to coincided harvesting.

The surge in Oils/Fats Price Index and Dairy Price Index mainly attributed to tight demand and supply balance. The Sugar Price Index also jumped 5.4% due to tight global supplies, while Meat Price Index remained steady due to falling meat prices in Europe and higher export prices in the US and Brazil.

Canada's agriculture industry sees the rising global prices as an opportunity as Canadian brand enjoys a reputation around the world due to quality of produce.
